Proper disposal of unwanted medicine helps protect both public health and our environment. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, along with the University of Illinois Extension, wanted to create a new website to help people properly dispose of unwanted and expired medications, and they reached out to Jackson Sky to help develop the visual brand and build the website.
Before the creative phase began, we started where we always do — with strategy. Once the overall approach for the project was defined, we moved into logo design. The client wanted a logo that felt clean and professional without feeling stark or corporate. They wanted something friendly and approachable, but not overly casual or playful. The result was a colorful, polished logo that works well across both digital and print materials.
The website was designed to serve as a resource for the general public looking for guidance on how to properly dispose of unwanted medications. One of the key features of the site is a simple, step-by-step interactive guide where users can answer questions about their medications and receive specific instructions on how and where to safely dispose of them.
Another major feature is an interactive map that allows users to enter their ZIP code and find nearby drop-off locations. The map includes filters for mileage radius, type of drop-off location and more. To help ensure the information stays current, the map data is automatically updated every 24 hours using a text file distributed by the DEA. At the time of writing this post, the map includes more than 14,000 locations!
